Why is it significant?
The Pakenham War Memorial, on the north corner of Henry and John
streets, Pakenham, in front of Pakenham Hall. It is a grey granite
cenotaph with a small, rock-faced obelisk at the top. It sits on a low
rock-faced plinth with two steps. It was erected in the 1920s to
honour the local men who served in the 1914-18 war. After the Second
World War, it was modified to honour the men and women who served in
that conflict, and the five men who were killed.
The Pakenham War Memorial is of local historic significance to
Cardinia Shire.
Historically, as a memorial to the men and women from the Pakenham
area who served in the armed forces, and the five who gave their lives
during the Second World War. The list of servicewomen is rare on war
memorials in the shire. (Criterion A)
