STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

Solomon's Buildings, erected on the historic Geelong Market Square sire in 1912-13, for Julius Solomon is the finest works of early 20th century architects, Tombs and Durran. Arranged as a series of bays and bow windows in a two-storey composition of striated bricks, the building is defined by domed pavilion at each end of the Moorabool Street facade. The establishment is a noted Geelong emporium and a familiar central city landmark. The original character of the facade is diminished with the painting out of the red brick contrasts, and the complete renovation I the Market Square Project in 1985-86.
