Statement of Significance

File note

The lockup is typical of the portable lockups which were frequently used on the Victorian goldfields in the 1850s and 1860s, reflecting the highly mobile nature of the gold mining population. It has architectural interest for its solid timber construction with steel bars running through the walls, ceiling and floor. The design of the former police residence is characteristic of police buildings in the 1880s, and it contributes to the nineteenth century character of the Moonambel streetscape. Together the lockup and the police station/residence are important material reminder of the role played by the police in enforcing law and order in the mining towns of the nineteenth century.
