Statement of Significance

The Upper Yarra River is of outstanding significance in the Melbourne region due to:

- Its cultural importance as the river on which Melbourne was established and has continued to grow

- Its importance as a major resource that is accessible to and utilised by the people of Melbourne for a multitude of uses including drinking water, recreation, agriculture and nature conservation

- The scenic beauty of the river and its environs

- The botanical importance of the remnants of riparian vegetation which are considered to form one of the rarest and most endangered vegetation communities in this region

- The rare and restricted species of plants found within this area

- The importance of various areas along the river as habitat for a range of native birds and animals, including several rare or restricted species

- The importance of this section of the river as one component of a major open space system which stretches along the river from the Melbourne ports to the Upper Yarra Reservoir.

LOCATION AND BOUNDARIES:

The Classified section of this river stretches from the headwaters of the river in the east to the western end of Warrandyte State Park and generally includes the flood plain and areas visible from the river itself.
