Statement of Significance

Contribution to landscape of historic garden
Aesthetic value
Outstanding example of species

The Pin Oak (Quercus palustris) makes a significant aesthetic contribution to the immediate landscape of Russell Street, Werribee. Its bright Autumn colours and seasonal changes provide a major contribution to the greater environment of Werribee. It was planted by Ms Charmaine Wakefield in 1970, and as a second generation planting it complements and accentuates, with its large dome shaped canopy, the curves of the ocean-liner shape of Arthur Pretty's 1940 Moderne inspired architecture of the residence. It is outstanding as an example of the species with its wide spreading and well structured canopy. In the Western Metropolitan Region of Melbourne large fine examples of this oak species are uncommon and more likely to be found in a private suburban garden. The notable size and structure of this specimen is astounding due to its young age and vigour. This specimen has been allowed to grow naturally and develop a canopy from ground level up to its apical points. Its full canopy silhouette is rarely allowed to develop in oak species when grown as specimen trees.
The tree is located on the north-west side of the historic residence
