Contribution to landscape of historic garden, important landmark This male specimen of the Canary Island Palm (Phoenix canariensis) is located on the south-eastern corner of Troup Park, and makes a significant aesthetic contribution to the immediate landscape of the old township of Werribee. It stands as a landmark at the eastern end of Watton Street on the corner with Cherry Street. Its use in the original planting scheme of Troup Park reflects a period planting style which often included large bold foliage trees. The evergreen sphere of palm leaves on the exceptionally tall trunk makes this a prime example of the species. This is very significant in relation to other specimens already on the Significant Tree Register which are not noted for their exceptional height. Its landscape use in this early-twentieth century garden is reflective of the historic planting style of that period. Measurements: 27/08/2011
