This Mediterranean Stone Pine (Pinus pinea) makes a significant aesthetic contribution to the immediate landscape. The broad mushroom shaped canopy supported by giant out-stretched limbs on one solitary trunk makes this specimen unique. Such characteristics are not typical for the species. Most specimens have a trunk which isdivided near the base into two to four.
This tree is located on the bank of the Werribee River at what is now known as River Bend Historical Park, and is the sole surviving nineteenth century historical landmark which demarcates the most south-western corner and boundary of the former Werribee Irrigation Colony (1889 - 1894). This late nineteenth century irrigation colony was pioneered by the famous co-founders of the Mildura (Vic) and Renmark (SA) Irrigation Districts: George Chaffey (1848 - 1932) and William Benjamin Chaffey (1856 - 1926). The tree was selected and planted circa 1890 by George Chaffey for the 25 metre wide 'Picnic Reserve'.
The tree is located on the bank of the Werribee River downstream from the Southern Water Diversion Weir at River Bend Historical Park..
