Statement of Significance

C Listed - Local Significance

The following is added informally by the Heritage Advisor, 9 February 2017, as an update/correction to the history provided in the citation:

The site at 55 Bellerine Street, Geelong, was acquired by William Box, ironmonger, in 1903. He had a timber Edwardian dwelling constructed at this time, comprising 6 rooms, bathroom, scullery and pantry. The Geelong Waterworks and Sewerage Trust Detail Plan. 14 (dated c.1914) and an aerial view by Charles Pratt in 1926-27 reveals that the dwelling had a principal hipped roof form with minor projecting gables to Bellerine Street. They comprised a post-supported verandah that returned along the south (Ryrie Street) elevation.

With the death of William Box in 1907, the property passed to his wife, Naarah. She lived there until 1925 when the dwelling was sold to William Hellier Long, surgeon. In 1929, he engaged the local architectural firm of Schefferle and Williams to design alterations and additions to the dwelling. The front gabled wings and verandah were replaced with the existing gables at this time, the roof was clad in tiles and much of the timber weatherboard wall cladding was replaced in brick. These changes are largely extant today.
