Statement of Significance

The Alexandra War Memorial is a statue of a World War I soldier with arms reversed, left foot forward, on a bluestone pedestal on a circular concrete base. The statue and plaques on the memorial are painted in a copper metallic paint. The memorial was unveiled on March 10th 1924 by the Governor of Victoria, Lord Stradbroke. It was originally set in the main street of the town but was moved in 1954 to combine with the World War II memorial. The sculptor was Margaret Baskerville. The inscription reads, "Erected By the Residents in the Shire of Alexandra in Memory of Those Who Made the Supreme Sacrifice in The Great War 1914-1918."
