This Blakely's Red Gum (Eucalyptus Blakelyi) is a large old tree well south of its normal distribution. Blakely's Red Gum is mainly distributed along the western tablelands of NSW extending into north-east Victoria. The nearest known occurrence of this species is at Melville Caves, about 80km north of Smeaton. This appears to be the only tree of this species in the area with most other surrounding trees being E. melliodora and E. rubida
It is one of the many remnant trees on an historically significant property; originally belonging to Captain John Hepburn who settled the area in 1838.
This tree is impressive for its size and form and its height is at the top end of what is described in the literature,Flora of Australia and Forest Trees of Australia. A large branch was broken from the tree when a tornado moved through in either 2006 or 2007.
