Statement of Significance

Contribution to landscape
Outstanding size
Aesthetic value
Outstanding example of species

This tree is a very large specimen of Brachychiton populneus and one of the largest in the Melbourne metropolitan area. The tree would have been planted not long after Elwood was established as a suburb suggesting it is somewhere between 80 to 90 years in age.
The tree is tall and well balanced in form and is currentlyin good health with very few dead branches evident.
Compared to all other cultivated Kurrajongs on the register this tree is the tallest, but it falls well short when compared to a single 22 metre high wild tree at Maringa Creek, Nyerimilang Park.
For its height and good condition it has a comparatively low trunk circumference. This suggests it is a young tree which has a lot more growing to do if it is well care for in the future.
08/03/2011: This tree is no longer in Clarke Reserve. A house now occupies this address and the tree is in an alcove of the house. It would appear that the house was designed & built to accommodate the tree
