The former Presbyterian Manse at 9 Scallan Street, Stawell, makes a significant contribution to the architectural amenity of the local area. It has significance as the Manse to St. Matthew's Presbyterian Church from 1920, and it is an intact example of a Late Federation styled residential building.
The former Presbyterian Manse at 9 Scallan Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a Late Federation style. These qualities include the complex gambrel, hipped and gabled roof forms clad in galvanised corrugated iron, together with the corner porch with its broken back and gabled roof form clad in galvanised corrugated iron. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the paired and turned timber porch posts, decorative arched timber porch fretwork, diagonal fretwork between the posts, face brick wall construction, two elongated face brick chimneys with rendered tops, broad eaves, decorative porch gable infill (timber battening and stucco panelling), front timber framed doorway with sidelights, arched narrow porch windows, timber framed double hung windows (including the tripartite windows in the gable ends), open timber gable fretwork and gable ventilators, asymmetrical composition and the single storey height.
The former Presbyterian Manse at 9 Scallan Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. The site is associated with the development of St. Matthew's Presbyterian Church from c.1862 and this building has associations with the Presbyterian church since its construction in 1920.The house also has associations with Williams Bros., builders.
