Statement of Significance

What is significant?
How is it significant?
Why is it significant?
The building at 146 Main Street, Stawell, is historically and architecturally significant at a CONTRIBUTORY level. Although the shopfront has been greatly altered, the remnant brick parapet and rear stepped gable roof forms clad in galvanised corrugated iron, brick wall construction (but not overpainting) and the parapeted gable ends, gable ventilators, brick chimney and shallow-arched window openings adorned with brick voussoirs are those particular elements that contribute to the historical and architectural amenity of the area.
Opportunities may be available for the appropriate reconstruction of the 19th century facade through an historical photograph held by the Stawell Historical Society. A photograph of the Child Bros./C. Hunt and Sons grocers, bakers and hardware store, clearly shows the elaborate brick and rendered parapet, skillion verandah with cast columns, brackets and valances, and the early timber framed shopfront with ingo.
