Statement of Significance
What is significant?
This property has been reviewed as part of the Stawell Main Street Precinct in 2024, and its heritage category is now Non-contributory.
How is it significant?
The property is Non-contributory to the precinct.
Why is it significant?
Text from the 2004 heritage study (NB: the building discussed below has been demolished):
The building at 122 Main Street, Stawell, is historically and architecturally significant at a CONTRIBUTORY level. Although the main facade and shopfront have been greatly altered, the rear hipped roof form clad in galvanised corrugated steel, face red brick wall construction (including the side parapeted walls), and the large face red brick chimney contribute to the historical and architectural amenity of the area.
Opportunities may be available for the appropriate reconstruction of the 19th century facade through an historical lithograph held by the Stawell Historical Society (the building was earlier known as W. Whiteside and Co., Tailors and Gentlemen's General Outfitters) and by replicating some of the details of the neighbouring more intact building at 124 Main Street.
