Statement of Significance

What is significant?
How is it significant?
Why is it significant?
The former Chadwick's Drapery Store, 157-161 Main Street, Stawell, is historically and architecturally significant at a CONTRIBUTORY level. Although the 19th century shopfront has been greatly altered, the early 20th century copper framed shopfronts with arched ingoes having Art Nouveau leadlighting and an Art Nouveau "Chadwicks" sign at the base of the window, together with the geometric leadlighted shopfront highlights contribute to the architectural significance of the streetscape. At the rear, the two storey height, 19th century pitched roof form, rear and side face brick parapeted walls and the elongated octagonal chimneys are those particular elements that contribute to the historical and architectural amenity of the area. This building was originally constructed in 1869 for Messrs Chadwick and Company, drapers, to a design by the Robert Alexander Love, architect of Bendigo and temporarily of Pleasant Creek.
