The former Preece shop, 52 McMahon Street, St. Arnaud, forms part of a group of buildings related to the Preece family building, decorating and undertaking businesses. The shop has significance as an example of a modest Victorian commercial style. The former Preece shop, 52 McMahon Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with commercial developments in St. Arnaud in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and although the front has been altered, it demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the gable roof form, together with a skillion roof street verandah, lapped galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, square edged weatherboard wall construction and unpainted brick chimney.
