Statement of Significance

The former Police Lock Up, 3 Jennings Street, St. Arnaud, is located at the rear of the Court House. Itwas constructed in 1862 at the time when the Police Residence and Stables were built. The largely intact structure has significance for its associations with the early development of St. Arnaud, and the need for police law enforcement. It also has significance as being one of an unusual grouping of former government and civic 19th and early 20th century buildings in a predominantly Victorian town, of which many are visually linked to the Queen Mary gardens.

The former Police Lock Up is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a rudimentary mid Victorian style. These qualities include the gable roof form that traverses the site, together with a projecting minor gable at the side. Other intact qualities include the unpainted brick wall construction, slate roof, moderate eaves, narrow vertical and rectangular openings, and the rough faced stone quoinwork, sills and lintels.

The former Police Lock Up and site are historically significant at a LOCAL level. They are associated with the early development of the St. Arnaud township and particularly with police enforcement from 1872 until the early to mid 20th century. The lock up is also associated with the 19th century contractors, Cormack and Irving.

Overall, the former Police Lock Up and site are of LOCAL significance.
