Statement of Significance

Stratford Lodge, Metcalfe, is a granite homestead built for pastoralist James Orr in 1848 or 49, it is believed. It is not known if the house was built in stages or at one time. There are two projecting wings to each end of the main facade and there is an encircling timber verandah. The roof is clad in iron. The house is U-shaped in plan about a courtyard and there is a slab kitchen.

Stratford Lodge is an early surviving homestead in Victoria with historical associations and of architectural importance. James Orr was a member of one of the explorer Major Mitchell's parties. In architectural terms, the homestead, if built originally in its present form, is an unusual design for this period, incorporating Georgian and Colonial elements into a distinctive compositional arrangement. The use of white granite is unusual and the slab kitchen is notable.

Stratford Lodge has been variously altered and added to, but is substantially intact and is in good condition.
