Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Nyora Primary School No. 3401, to the extent of the original school, designed by the Public Works Department and built in 1915, and part of the former Outtrim School, relocated to this site in 1934, at 27 Grundy Avenue, Nyora is significant. The two school buildings, which have been joined together, are of typical design with weatherboard walls, gabled iron roofs and banks of multi-paned windows with hoppers in the south end elevations. The 1915 Nyora School on the west side, is distinguished by its lower roof pitch, and an added tall multi-pane window. Non-original alterations and additions and other buildings on the site are not significant.
How is it significant?
The Nyora Primary School No. 3401 is of local historic and social significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, it is associated with the growth of Nyora in the early twentieth century after it became a railway junction following the opening of the railway to Wonthaggi in 1910. The moving of part of the former Outtrim school to this site in 1934 demonstrates the practice by the Education Department of moving and re-using buildings according to need as well as the increasing centralisation of schools across the South Gippsland Shire from the late 1920s onwards. (Criterion A) Socially, it is significant as a place that has strong associations with the Nyora community through its use as the local school for over 100 years. The school was established with the support of the local community and they have continued to play an active role in the development of the school since its opening. (Criterion G)
