Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Kongwak Uniting Church as constructed in 1898 and extended in 1963, at 18 Brownes Road, Kongwak, is significant. It is a Carpenter Gothic church , which reflects the two building stages in 1898 and 1963. The 1898 building forms the main longitudinal gabled section, which retains lancet (pointed arch) windows (some with coloured glass) in the side walls, while the front wall now features a large window with a pointed head. The secondary gable to the side added in 1963 has clerestory windows to the side walls, and the entry porch, now located at the side, has a low pitch gable roof with prominent eaves .
How is it significant?
The Kongwak Uniting Church is of local historic and social significance to South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, it is one of the oldest buildings in Kongwak and is associated with the formation of the town and district in the late nineteenth century. The alterations and additions demonstrate how the building was extended to meet the needs of the congregations as they grew in the twentieth century. It is significant as an example of a Union Church, which demonstrates how Protestant congregations co-operated during the formative years of settlement to establish places of worship. It illustrates the strength of inter-faith support within the community that continues today. (Criterion A) It has social value for its strong and enduring associations with the local community through its use as a church and Sunday school, which has been a focal point of the local congregations for over 110 years. (Criterion G)
