Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The reinforced concrete bridge over the Powlett River at Outtrim is significant. This is a single-span bridge with concrete abutments on a now-bypassed section of road. It was designed by the Reinforced Concrete & Monier Pipe Construction Co. and constructed in 1914.

How is it significant?
The reinforced concrete bridge over the Powlett River at Outtrim is of local historic and representative significance to South Gippsland Shire.

Why is it significant?
It is significance as an early reinforced concrete bridge and one of two surviving examples in the Shire designed and constructed by the Reinforced Concrete & Monier Pipe Construction Co., which was a pioneer in reinforced concrete construction in Victoria. It demonstrates the early use of concrete as a more permanent alternative to timber in the construction of bridges in rural areas, which was encouraged by the establishment of the Country Roads Board in 1914.
