Statement of Significance

Outstanding size
Outstanding example of the species

This tree is particularly tall and a fine specimen displaying a typical conical form for which this species is noted. It is of excellent height and size and makes a significant contribution to the urban landscape. It is visible from many surrounding streets, including the Bulleen Road Freeway intersection and elsewhere in this 1950s estate.
It is believed that the tree was planted in the 1950s and purchased from the then Ferny Creek Nursery (now Conifer Gardens). The seed is believed to have been grown by John Versteege, the proprietor of the Ferny Creek Nursery, and accessed (c.1950) by Mr Comeadows (President of the Royal Horticultural Society) who accessed early batches of seed sent to Botanic Gardens around the world from China from 1948 onwards.
