This tree is significant as it is a mature example of the species with relatively large physical dimensions in comparison to other trees of same species currently classified by the National Trust. There are only a small number of mature specimens known in Victoria.
Located at the old Fern Hills School site, it is purported that this tree was planted by the children as a shade tree. The school first opened on 23 September 1888.
