The land was settled in the 1920s by the WIlliams family who operated a nursery until the 1960s. The nursery was operating at its peak in the 1950s and was purchased by the State Government in 1984. The site has many fine exotic and rare or uncommon trees. The two Nothofagus fusca (Red Beech), a native of New Zealand, are the finest and largest known trees in Victoria. The tree near the Gully is particularly impressive. The other tree further up the slope (3.54x29x26.5) has two major limbs forming the trunk. Other trees are known in gardens at Mount Macedon, Pirianda, and Nobelius nursery. Another smaller tree is in the south-east but has been damaged by fallen gum limbs.
