Historical significance

A small, slender tree of weeping habit, possibly because it has not been pruned for many years. It isin the remnant of the garden belonging to the Government Storehouse, once locatedon this site. It is presumed to be the only pear tree within the Central Business DIstrict of Melbourne
The Chinese consider the Pear a symbol of good luck. The tree was transplanted in August 1987 from the south-west corner of Bourke and King Sts Melbourne and is now in the back courtyard of the Royal Melbourne Hotel at 629 Bourke St Melbourne.
