An interesting tree adding to the impressive collection in these Gardens. Only three of these trees are known in cultivation in Victoria; the other two growing in the Royal Botanic Gardens. The Broad Leaved Lime is a British native, found in South Yorkshire and Monmouthshire in the wild. Despite the common name, lime trees (of the genus Tilia) are not related to the citrus fruit. The leaves are large and heart-shaped, dark green but paler and hairy beneath; and turn yellow in autumn. The bark is dark grey and deeply fissured and cracked. The pale yellow sweetly scented flowers are borne in small clusters at the end of slender stems in early summer. The Broad Leaved Lime flowers earlier than other limes. and has small fruit (to 1.2cm) that are downy and sometimes persist into winter.
