Outstanding example of species.

These seven trees form an impressive collection of Stone Pines dating to the beginning of the gardens in the 1860-70s. The trees have attained a large size and developed their characteristic spreading crown. The name, Stone Pine, comes from the idea that this tree grows well in stony ground. Pinus pinea has been cultivated extensively for at least 6,000 years for its edible pine nuts, which have been trade items since early historic times. The tree has been cultivated throughout the Mediterranean region for so long that it has naturalised and is often considered native beyond its natural range.
