Statement of Significance

"Folly Farm" is of high historical significance due to its association with notable Australian garden designers, Edna Walling and Ellis Stones. The site includes a cottage; domestic garden designed by Miss Edna Walling and constructed by Mr Ellis Stones; an outer garden planted under the direction of Miss Walling and; a grazing paddock. The original cottage was built in 1912 and has been extended over the years. Miss Walling designed and supervised the garden construction in the mid 1930's and in the late 1930's supervised the development of the driveway. The design was typical of the Walling style comprising of natural rock outcrops, a pond, flowing lawns, stone paving, dry stone walls and compartmentalised design. A large informal garden separated from the main garden by a rock wall was constructed by the owner following guidelines from Walling. A 7 acre "home paddock" has been retained next to the garden and allows clear views of the north-west landscape. The paddock is an integral part of the house and garden complex.
