Vitex lucens is endemic to New Zealand and provides highly valued hardwood. It is an evergreen with pinkish red flowers produced in winter and is rare in cultivation in Victoria. Puriri was first collected at Tolaga Bay by Banks and Solander during Cook's first visit in 1769
Other examples occur at Portland, Coolart and the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.
