Historical significance
This memorial avenue is believed to have been planted after the 1914-18 war. A large memorial is located at the eastern end. The avenue is an important feature in the township of Traralgon. The trees have previously been pollarded and require extensive tree surgery to restructure the crown branch structure and remove deadwood. Recent developments, native plantings and raised brick flowerbeds are inappropriate and add to the cluttered appearance of the avenue.
22/04/2010 - There are 26 remaining original trees in this avenue. 22 x Ulmus procera, 2 x Ulmus glabra and 2x Ulmus x hollandica. There are 6 semi-mature trees also in amongst this avenue (replacements) 5 x Ulmus procera and a single Ulmus glabra.
The section from Franklin to Church Streets was planted in1919 as a WW1 memorial, whilst the section from Church to Breed Streets was planted in 1945/46 as a WW2 commemoration .These trees are located in the centre median of Kay Street, between Franklin and Breed Streets.
