Carl Axel Nobelius was born in Finland in 1851 and came to Australia at the age of 17. He was employed by Taylor & Sangster, nurserymen, in Toorak Road. He established a fruit tree nursery at Emerald around 1880. By 1903 he had stock of one million trees, a sizeable amount of these being exported each year. In 1914 stock amounted to two million trees and covered 450 acres. He died in 1921.
