This is a very large and old specimen of a 'Black Pippen' pear. This tree is the only known example (1989) of this cultivar in Victoria and is the only remaining tree of a pear orchard planted in 1870 by Mr J Lilford (Snr), a pioneeer of the orchard industry in the Goulburn Valley. Pippin' is an old English word derived from the French word for 'seedling'
The tree stands in a grazing paddockatthecorner property,1726 paddock , north side of Lilford Road, 0.75 km west of Byrneside-Kyabram Road.
