These areas are of particular significance because of the remnant plant communities, faunal habitats and visual landscape types within them. Myrtle Beech (Nothofagus cunninghamii) closed-forests represent the Antarctic element in Australian vegetation, and are confined to moist, sheltered localities in Tasmania and in southern and eastern Victoria. Mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans) is restricted to south-eastern Australia where few trees now remain. Bulga and Tarra Valley National Parks contain the last undamaged remains of these forests in the South Gippsland Hills. Hence these areas have local, state, national and international signficance. Classified 06/12/1982.
