Sandy Point is of State significance because of its unique terrain and ecological significance and associations with the early coastal exploration of Westernport and the Naval Depot: - Unique low-lying sandy terrain including numerous multiple dune ridges - Areas of undisturbed coastal woodland and swamp enclaves not found elsewhere on the Mornington Peninsula - Illustrating stages in geomorphological evolution and associated vegetation successions - Association with the French explorer D'Urville who landed on Sandy Point in 1826 - Association with the Naval Depot from 1912. LOCATION: South of Hann's Inlet, east of South Beach Road and Western Hill, being part of the Commonwealth of Australia (Royal Australian Navy Cerberus Base: restricted area) Classified 05/1974
