Statement of Significance

The Fletcher Jones Gardens, developed from 1947 and maintained to a high standard since that date, is of State significance:

- as a singular example in Victoria of a post World War II industrial garden; the garden still maintains its link with the factory, is a focal point for visitors to Warrnambool and fittingly had its origins in a quarry reclamation project;

- as a demonstration of a wide range of horticultural practices; these include bedding of annuals and maintenance of standard roses, rockeries, ponds, fountains, sculpture, turf and shrubberies;

- socially, as a focus of neatness and order, cultural values embodied in post-war Victorian suburban development; and as a focus of sentiment through the large number of visitors who annually visit the site;

- for its retention of former Army buildings, demonstrative of the post-war shortage of building materials and the initiative of the factory's founder, David Fletcher Jones; examples include the concrete block front fence and the former Lake Bolac military building.
