East Melbourne is probably the most distinctive and important residential area dating from the nineteenth century remaining in metropolitan Melbourne. It stands today as an area of considerable homogeneity and authenticity. overall the quality of its landscape is high, that quality being enhanced by the proximity of Fitzroy Gardens and Yarra Park, and by the inclusion of Darling Square and Powlett Reserve. Its important streetscapes are generally remarkably intact, whilst the building stock is surprisiningly varied in terms of both styles illustrated and areas of development represented.
Many of Melbourne's most important residential buildings are located here. The area reflects an era of nineteenth century housing and allied landscape of a generally affluent nature and has had an important relationship with the adjacent central city area of Melbourne. The contrast is made more vivid today with the present built form of the central Business District.
