Benyeo homestead, north-west of Apsley near the South Australian border, was constructed in 1863 and extended in 1882 for pioneer settler Hugh Lawrence McLeod. This single storey stone homestead is constructed of coursed rubble with freestone quoins and architraves, half octagonal bay windows and finely detailed timber verandah to the principal facade. The stone woolshed of T plan is built of rubble stone with unusual half round arched doors and fanlights.
Benyeo homestead is one of the earliest pastoral homesteads constructed in this relatively remote and comparatively late settled region of Victoria.
The homestead is notable for the refined timber verandah, echoing the stylistic eclecticism of the 1850s and the use of bay windows as principal features. The early woolshed is a distinctive structure, compatible with the homestead and part of an interesting far western Victorian pastoral station.
Benyeo is maintained in good condition and is intact externally.
