Statement of Significance

Former Derwent Hotel, Corner Wharf and Victoria Streets, Port Albert, was constructed circa 1858 on its sharply angled corner site. The brick structure has a"hipped" corrugated iron clad roof which is continued to form a verandah to both facades. The angled corner wall has a doorway and a second door gives access to the central passage. The building is unrendered and has been painted.
The hotel is an early surviving building in the historic early port of Port Al bert. The location of the building on its sharply angled site results in considerable streetscape value and the treatment of the roof to suit the site is of note. Stylistically the old hotel is in the Colonial Style, as evidenced particularly by the steeply pitched roof continuing to form the verandah. The building is typologically a good example of an early hotel.
The property is intact to a reasonable extent and in reasonable condition.
Of local significance.
