Statement of Significance

The complex of Police buildings, constructed between 1883-1888 to the designs of Public Works Department architect E R Laver, is notable at the State level for the range and scale of buildings that survive intact and for their contribution to Warrnambool's notable precinct of 19th century public buildings.
The main rendered two storey Italianate building is one of the relatively few larger scale police buildings in Victoria, incorporating offices and barracks above, and has an imposing presence. The four cell bluestone lock-up is also relatively large for the period. The stables were also rare for a period when police stables were usually timber, and the large rendered stone structure, incorporating five stalls, a harness room and a loft, with its extensive quoining, is impressive. The retention of the Police Residence, a typical Italianate villa, in matching style to the main buildings, adds to the significance of the complex.
