Statement of Significance

Holy Innocents Church, constructed in 1927-8 displays a strong Arts & Craft flavour through its consciously simple composition which relies on the natural textures of panelled upper sections over a weatherboarded base. It is architecturally significant at a State level because this simplicity is underlined by the use of traditional and generally low cost materials which nevertheless achieve a sophisticated and highly successful visual effect. Particularly notable is the unusual bellcote on the roof ridge with its wide eaves and dramatically flared broach spire capping. The leadlight glass is also complementary to the other design elements.
Although the architect is unknown, comparison with North and William's earlier work and also Alexander North's work suggest the hand of Louis Williams.
The church has lost a little of its distinction with the overpainting of the original colours which emphasised the compostition.
