Statement of Significance

Major Mitchell crossed the Goulbourn River at Tahbilk on his way south in 1836. The winery was established in 1860 by J P Bear and the main cellar with its stone superstructure and tower date from that time. In 1875 a 70 metre long brick vaulted cellar was added to this original structure. There are several outbuildings and an extensive collecttion of equipment and momentos illustrating the history of Tahbilk.
This is one of the oldest wineries in Victoria. Its extensive underground cellars with their huge timber vats and their vernacular stone and timber superstructure are notable examples of winery buildings. The bell-tower is a unique and distinctive feature. The extensive outbuildings and collection of old winery equipment are also important. The winery is picturesquely situated amid lakes, waterways and mature exotic trees. The site is notable as Major Mitchell's crossing point of the Goulbourn River.
The buildings still serve their original purpose and there have been only minor alterations since they were originally constructed.
