Statement of Significance

Kolor homestead, under the twin volcanic cones of Mount Rouse, near Penshurst, was constructed in 1868 for Irish born pioneer pastoralist John Joseph Twomey. Joseph Reed, the eminent Melbourne architect, designed this asymmetrical plan, single storey Victorian Italianate style mansion with belcast tower. Exquisitely worked bluestone was used in construction.
Kolor homestead is the most picturesque Victorian Italianate style mansion in far western Victoria and an examplar of the mason's craft in the usually intractable basalt. The homestead, for sixty years in the ownership of the distinguished Twomey family, is one of Joseph Reed's most successful redidential designs and most notable for the precise details of the masonry, asymmetrical plan and dominant tower.
Kolor homestead is maintained in an excellent state and virtually original condition. Minor alterations to the rear rooms were affected in the 1950s. The interior is of great interest.
