The Grange Burn Mill is historically and architecturally significant at a state level as a particularly intact example of a mid-nineteenth century bluestone water and steam powered flour mill associated with one of the Western District's outstanding pioneers. Built in 1859 by Peter Learmonth from Edinburgh, it began operating in May 1859. Serviced by Bodingtons, mill engineers, in 1882/4. Having seen the need for a flour mill in the district, Peter Learmonth built one on the "Prestonholme" run about 3 miles east of Hamilton, on the north side of the Grange Burn. It seems very little flour was exported from the Hamilton area, partly because of transport problems, but also because there was a high local demand.
Learmonth also purchased the Weighbridge Flour Mill, Hamilton (about 1868); he owned the Bayduk Mill, in partnership with George Holms, in 1871; in 1872 he purchased the Sandform Mill for 1,350 pounds and in 1874 was listed as owner of the Penshurst Flour Mill.
