Statement of Significance

Lightstation group consisting of 60ft. tower and head keeper's quarters (1859); assistants' and relief quarters (1952); watchroom workshop, garages, explosives store, store room and engine house, all arranged in a tightly-knit group on a rocky promontory high above the sea.
The constricted site has led to an axial arrangement of the group that has as its focus the rugged and stocky tower. Although white painted along with all the other buildings, the tower is unusual for its rock faced masonry construction. This texture finds echo in the unpainted dry stone walls that link and shelter the buildings of the group. The stone stair of the tower spirals around a hollow stone central column and leads to a lantern room of unusual design in that the "platework" is of stone. The lantern itself was reconstructed in 1974/75 to accommodate new equipment.
