Statement of Significance

Woodlands is one of Victoria's grandest Italianate country mansions, built in 1867 to the design of Crouch and Wilson, and incorporating an earlier single-storey house within it (the part now surrounded by a verandah), and detached from it another early and charming building with dormer windows and Gothic bargeboards. The exterior design is picturesquely asymmetrical, with two towers, classical window heads and bracketted eaves, but unusual for this style in that it is carried out in face brick and cement dressings, to accord with the earlier building. Although a proportion of the decoration has been painted out, the interior includes exceptionally fine details, like the tessellated Minton tile floor of the stair hall and, also in the stair hall, one of Ferguson, Urie and Lyon's most magnificent stained glass windows, library bookcases by Thwaites of Melbourne, elaborately and delicately modelled ceilings by Scurry & Mackennal, imitation embossed and gilt leather dado papers, and grotesque stenciled friezes in a post-Christopher Dresser manner.
