The original sheep run was established in 1842 by Mr Thomas Vickery who later sold out to Mr Duncan Cooper. The property was sold again in 1854 to Mr William Lewis. The Lewis family were important in the development of sheep breeding and grazing and the development of fine Merino wool in the Western district area. The homestead was originally a weatherboard cottage with a flat iron roof around which Mr Lewis erected the current stone house in 1864. An 1876 addition consisted of a two-storied wing. The house was also surrounded by a large and lovely garden and orchard.
