Statement of Significance

The homestead was established by northern Italian immigrant Carlo Gervasoni soon after his arrival in Victoria in 1852 and prior to 1860. He erected a two storey stone farmhouse with timber verandah, wine and cheese cellars, stables and farm building using a rubble stone construction technique characteristic of northern Italian vernacular traditions.
The homestead at Yandoit, a district mostly settled and developed by Swiss Italian immigrants in the 1850s, was the largest farmhouse in the area and one which clearly reflects the architectural viticultural and agricultural traditions of northern Italy and the Tyrol. Carlo Gervasoni was an important and influential settler in the region and the now deserted and dilapidated homestead still remains under the ownership of direct descendants.
The homestead has not been occupied since c.1926. The building group is now extremely dilapidated and derelict and a virtual ruin. The distinctive features of this evocative complex are still readily apparent.
