Byramine Station was established by Elizabeth Hume (sister-in-law of H Hume) who trecked overland from Gunning, New South Wales, with her family in 1842. The homeatead was erected to plans prepared by an English architect for use in India and is constructed from bricks made on the site and from pine from the nearby forests. It is planned around a large central hall with octagon shaped principal rooms and is totally encircled by a verandah.

This is one of the finest and earliest homesteads in Victoria and has survived almost completely intact since it was orignally constructed. The association of the property with Elizabeth Hume is most important. The homesteads plan is most unusual and provides a superb series of interior spaces. The original design was by an English architect for use in India. The house epitomizes a vernacular design totally sympathetic to Australian climatic conditions, and is picturesquely situated on low sand hills overlooking the river flats. The workmanship and materials are of great interest.
The house is intact and in a sound structural condition. The timber verandah posts have been gradually replaced and their original timber mouldings have been removed.
