Statement of Significance

Erected in 1888 for Brown Corke & co, who operated a chain of general stores in the area. The buildings comprise a row of three single storey brick shops with a cast iron verandah, intact shop fronts and a high brick parapet front wall with balustrade nd pedimented bname plates. The shopfronts have large plate glass windows and double door entrances situated in centrally located chamfer recesses.

Browne Corke & co store is a superb example of late 19th century shop architecture and is an outstanding feature of the picturesque country town. It is one of the best preserved examples in Victoria of the large country general stores which have now almost ceased to exist. The repetitive composition is typical of shop architecture, the deep first floor parapets with nameplates, the entrancedoors with fine fanlights and the verandah with interesting cast iron work incorporating crowns, are all distinctive features.
