Probable date of construction by 1863 when the first documented owner is given as Michael Tilley.By 1870, the house was owned by Dr. James Pestell, one of Kyneton's earliest doctors.

Striking features of the cottage are its carved bluestonewindow and door surrounds and excellent proportions.

The cottage is important locally for its association with the Pestell family.
